Combat 18 was started by the British National Party, which was a small right winged party in Britain that originated in England during in 1992. From England the organization grew and spread to other countries such as Canada, America, and Germany. Their name is derived from letters of the alphabet 1 for “A” and 8 for “H.” 18 spells out Hitler’s initials numerically.
Combat 18 was set up to act as the Sturmabteilung or SA, like the NSDAP had to protect its party during the 20’s and 30’s in Germany. Just like the NSDAP, the British National Party was constantly attacked and harasses by anti-fascist, which lead them to form their own militant wing. However, just like the SA, Combat 18 would become over with Feds and infiltrators, and become destructive to its actual purpose.
Combat 18 might make claim that they were set up as a defensive organization but were offensive from the start. C18’s first task was setting up a magazine, and later a website known as Redwatch, where they published a list of names, photographs, addresses, and other points of contact of their political opponents, in order to get them harassed. Since then, Combat 18 has been linked to many other hate crimes and even murders.
Their most notorious murder was that of Christopher Castle, in 1997, by Charlie Sargent. Charlie Sergant was one of the original founders. He left the movement once it was found out he was a Fed. Castle still made great contributions to the group, and many of the leaders wanted him to rejoin. They were cautious of him, so they sent a mediator, named Christopher Castle, to talk to him. When the met Charlie Sargent at his house he was with two other men, a political associate, and Martin Cross, who was a guitarist for Skrewdriver. Cross plunged a blade into Castle back killing him.
Between 1998 and 2006, multiple raids took place against Combat18 in England, Ireland, Germany, and Belgium which resulted in many of their members getting arrested. Other groups would form by splitting off of Combat 18, such as White Wolves and Racial Volunteer Force. Since then, Combat 18 had been connected to many other accounts of terror activities, including the murder of a German politician named Walter Lübcke in 2019. A year before another 8 Combat 18 members were found with 50kg of explosive known as ANFO, when they were arrested for other previous crimes.
It’s unknown if Combat 18 is still active. Their forum website went down and had the domain point to an online store.
Oddly enough the store sells “Skewdriver” albums which was the same band that the murderer of Christopher Castle was from.
Combat 18 might have caused a lot of trouble in Europe and other places of the world, but other groups with the same branding, techniques, and goals, would also emerge.
