1983 United States Capitol Building Attacks

During the year 1983 the United States Capital building was bomb, or at least tempted twice; once on October 18, and then again on November 7.

The first bombing that year was done by an Israeli named Israel Rubinowits, however his attempt was unsuccessful. He went to the capital as a visitor, carrying a device. When he was approached by four under cover security guards, he threatened to detonate it. Luckily, he was subdued by them. After a guilty plea, he only got 6 months in prison.

The next attack was done, by a terrorist radical group, which claimed to attack America for their invasion of Grenada. A few minutes before the attack, a tape-recorded telephone call was placed to the Washington Post, about the imminent terrorist attack. At 10:58pm the bomb exploded, luckily it didn’t kill anyone. It was discovered that the attacks have been carried out by a left winged terrorist group known as May 19th Communist Organization, which had also committed other terrorist attacks that took place that year as well.

A history of attacks on the U.S. Capitol, 44 years after the Weather Underground bombing – The Washington Post

Their leader being Susan Rosenberg, who was Jewish. She was arrested and sentenced to 58 years in prison. Interestingly, Bill Clinton commuted her sentence on his last day in office. Compared to how the members of the people who visited the Capitol on January 6th, 2020, these two attackers got off easy.
