Guatemala was one of first to recognize Israel, when it formed, in 1947. This led to a diplomatic relationship between Israel and Guatemala. Guatemala would be faced with revolution and a civil. After America initiated a coup in 1954, the country was brought into a civil war. A genocide also started taking place against the native Mayan people of the country.
Things got so bad in the 70’s that an arms embargo took place on the country. Israel found way to circumvent the embargo and ship weapons to Guatemala anyway. Guatemala still uses Israeli weapons today in their armed forces.
