Unit 8200

As Israel was taking shape, and the IDF was forming, a new unit know as Unit 8200 was emerging. The 8200 was something known as a Signal intelligence unit, or sigint for short. As a sigint unit their main job was to collect intelligence on the enemy by use of electronic means, this includes activities involving code breaking and monitoring radio transmissions. While 8200 was establish in 1952, with the use of old and outdated American sigint equipment. They were kept in the shadows until 2009, when a 10-year-old case of the 8200 tracking a cellphone attached to bomb was published about in a book, by Ronen Bergman.

The 8200 is a unit consisting of very young people, mainly 18–21-year-olds, with them having an afterschool program for Jews as young 16. It’s interesting to watch how many of these young 8200 members usually go on to work in tech startups or in media in America and other countries. PragerU is a good example.
