The First Set of Projects

America originally tried doing something similar to an Azov movement, back in the late 1940’s but failed. It was code named Operation Belladonna and Operation Trident.

CIA Documents:

Belladona

The first project was known as Operation Belladona. This operation was set to send Ukrainian refugees back into Soviet occupied Ukraine, in an effort to reestablish connections that Ariad were able to meet. The main goal of Belladonna was to collect information on Soviet activities in Ukraine.

Lynx

There was also another mission that these spies would operate as well, known as Operation Lynx. Operation Lynx was another intelligence operation but was classified as something known as “Positive Intelligence.” This was where the American would-be collecting intelligence, using spy craft, but not on their enemies, but rather friendly forces in Ukraine that they could link up with as well.

Trident

After Operation Lynx was able to collect information on friendly force inside Ukraine. America had a better understanding of the Ukrainians partisan network. The next phase involved something known as “Operation Trident” where the allies put into motion a support network to better manage and support their new Ukrainian counter parts.

Ukele

America knew that the Soviet NKVD would be trying to infiltrate and sabotage any effort to help the Ukrainians. Operation Ukele was put into place to provide counterintelligence service to the Ukrainian partisan, who were working with the United States.
