While the whole world was looking to start a war and finish Germany, Germany was doing to exact opposite, trying to look for ways to form peace instead. Germany was trying to rebuild her military back even before Hitler got elected to power, it was in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. Many of the ally’s countries took offense to this. Seeing that this was not viewed as popular, Hitler, on May 17, 1933, made a statement, about reversing the decree to rebuild his military. He was quoted in saying:
“Germany will be perfectly ready to disband her entire military establishment and destroy the small amount of arms remaining to her, if the neighboring countries will do the same thing with equal thoroughness.”
No answer was ever received. As time went one the League of Nation stepped in to negotiate, stating that Germany would need to disarm and go through a “probation” period before any of their wishes were granted. This led Hitler to withdraw from the League of Nations on October 14, 1933. However, on December 18, 1933, Hitler came forward with a deal for the Leagues of nations with these six points:
- Germany receives full equality of rights.
- The fully armed States undertake amongst themselves not to increase their armaments beyond their present level.
- Germany adheres to this agreement, freely undertaking to make only so much actual moderate use of the equality of rights granted to her as will not represent a threat to the security of any other European power.
- All States recognize certain obligations in regard to conducting war on humane principles, or to the elimination of certain weapons for use against the civilian population.
- All States accept a uniform general control which will watch over and ensure the observance of these obligations.
- The European nations guarantee one another the unconditional maintenance of peace by the conclusion of non-aggression pacts, to be renewed after ten years.
France responded with a No, since other western nations as well as the Soviet Union were also building up their militaries as well. However, at this same time, the military forces in Germany were being boosted to 300,000 men, instead of the 100,000 that they were demanded to be limited by the Treaty of Versailles.
On March 1, 1935, Hitler made a statement that he wanted nothing but for Germany to live at peace with its neighbors. Two years later on May 21, 1935, another peace proposal was offered after he already started building up the military, which he got no response for.
The only peace proposal that Germany got a good response from was the Naval Agreement of June 18, 1935, with Britain. This was a deal where Germany would retain a Naval fleet at 35% of the British navy, so long as they could maintain peace. Germany was definitely getting the shorter end of the deal, but Hitler felt like this was important to follow through on this, so his country looked
The next year on March 3rd, 1936, Hitler had his forces occupy the Rhineland and take it back from France, but on March 16th another peace deal was offered, for which France refused.
After Germany annex Austria, another peace deal was arranged between Adolf Hitler and Neville Chamberlain, on September 30, 1938, which promise peace and state:
“We have had a further meeting to-day and have agreed in recognizing that the question of Anglo-German relations is of the first importance for the two countries and for Europe.
We regard the agreement signed last night and the Anglo-German Naval Agreement as symbolic of the desire of our two peoples never to go to war with one another again.
We are resolved that the method of consultation shall be the method adopted to deal with any other questions that may concern our two countries, and we are determined to continue our efforts to remove possible sources of difference and thus to contribute to assure the peace of Europe.”
However, Neville Chamberlain, was replaced with a war mongering alcoholic named Winston Churchill in October of 1940, who did nothing but push the British population into an inevitable war with Germany. More peace deal would be sent to other countries trying to fight the Germans, but they were all rejected by the leaders of these countries.
